South Holston Lake
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) controlled South Holston Lake is the largest lake in the Northeast TN/Southwest VA region with 182 miles of shoreline, and stretches more than 23 miles long. The Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee and the Jefferson National Forest in Virginia are managed by the United States Forestry Service which borders 73% of the shoreline of the pristine South Holston Lake and the remainder of the shoreline is privately owned.
South Holston lake is the largest of the four public TVA lakes in the Tri Cities Region. Laurel Marina & Yacht Club is the largest marina within at least a 300 mile radius of Bristol, TN. South Holston Lake is recognized as one of the top two if not the best smallmouth bass lakes in the United States. It is a deep (more than 280') lake that is very clear and clean and is recognized as a wonderful lake for many other types of fish such as trout, walleye, northern pike, blue gill, crappie, and catfish.
Our marina is the most conveniently located marina on South Holston Lake to the main highway (US Highway 421). Laurel Marina & Yacht Club (lake location on Shady Ford Road), the original property, is located in Sullivan County, TN near Bristol, TN/VA. This is the closest marina on South Holston Lake to Bristol, TN/VA (approximately 9 miles from the Bristol, TN city limits) and only 30 to 45 minutes from Johnson City, TN and Kingsport, TN the other two primary population centers in the region. The Tri-Cities region has a population of approximately 455,000 within 75 miles of Bristol, TN, and the Tri-Cities TN/VA region is centrally located within 600 miles of 55% of the U.S. population.
Laurel Marina & Yacht Club is accessible by a four lane from anywhere in the country except for the last 2.7 miles of the trip which continues as a highly traveled two lane well maintained state highway connecting Boone, NC and other popular tourist destinations in western North Carolina to the Tri-Cities region that is less than one hour away. The marina is composed of approximately one and one half miles of shoreline within the harbor limits. There are approximately 4.0 acres of private land and 6 acres of public land that includes parking areas for more than 400 vehicles. There is mooring capacity for more than 600 boats including slips to moor houseboats up to 120' and we built our own private 18' X 120' concrete access ramp into the lake.
